Community Garden - My Plot #1
On Saturday, I went down to the Hill Farm Teaching Facility, and staked a claim on my personal garden plot. It is such a cool idea that I'm not surprised that there were only 5 plots left by the time I went out there. Here's the deal: for $5 (non-refundable) and $10 (refundable) deposit, you get your own plot of land where you can grow whatever you want, as long as it is all organic. You can plant your own seeds, grow flowers, vegetables, etc. - whatever you want! It's a good learning experience for anyone who wants to learn, and it's a great thing for those of us who live in apartments and have been wanting a place where we can grow things. Plus, they have it all stocked up - free starter plants, mulch (hay), seeds, tools, irrigation system (yes, they even water it for you!). If that wasn't enough, there are also gobs of plants and trees, like strawberries, figs, other fruit in the orchard, potatoes, melons, that LSU is responsible for maintaining, and we can pick from those anytime we like.
This is part of the Community Garden project at LSU, and there are a few rows dedicated to staples such as potatoes, corn, and beans, that we all help with, and the what's produced is given to the area food bank.

This is me posing with my plot after levelling it and softening up the dirt. I think the plot's about 15' L x 3' W.

They told us that sometimes they have a problem with people coming in from the outside to pick from the gardens.

Some of the vegetables I planted/squished together in my plot. In the end, I planted beets, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, brussel sprouts, spinach, squash and tomatoes.

POSTED: It's my plot. Keep out.

My friend Teresa from Mexico also got a plot.
